Flooring

Laminate, LVT or wood: which room?

The right floor depends on the room, what's underneath and how you live. Start with the subfloor, then choose the finish.

Start underneath.

Subfloors need to be level, dry and suitable for the finish. Forbo's guidance says relative humidity should be below 75% for resilient floors, or a surface damp proof membrane may be needed. Limits vary by product, so follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Asking the right questions.

  • Does it get wet? Kitchens and bathrooms need a product made for that. Check the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Is it new screed? Quick-Step's rule of thumb is to wait one week per cm up to 4cm, and always measure moisture.
  • Is it a flat? Check your lease before fitting a hard floor.
  • Are the old tiles safe? Asbestos can hide under carpets in older homes.

Our usual suggestion is LVT, in every room: kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, hallways and bedrooms.
