You've probably already got the space. It's just not a room yet. A conversion turns a garage, barn or outbuilding into somewhere you'll actually use.

Barns and outbuildings.
There are three different situations and the rules differ a lot. A garden building used alongside the house falls under the outbuilding rules. A building used as separate living space, like an annexe, doesn't. A farm building becoming a home may use the Class Q right, or need full planning permission.
If that's you, talk to the planning authority early. We do the joinery and electrics ourselves and bring in other trades for the rest.
Questions we get asked.
Can I convert my barn without planning permission?
Perhaps, under Class Q, but prior approval is still needed. Limits include no single home over 150 square metres. Otherwise you'll need a planning application.
Can I use my garden outbuilding as a bedroom or annexe?
Be careful. Permitted development for outbuildings covers incidental uses, not separate self-contained living accommodation. Talk to the planning authority first.
