Media walls: what to plan first.

A media wall is a built-out feature wall that hides the cables and gives the TV, the fire and the shelves a proper home. The decisions you make before anyone picks up a saw are the ones that matter.

Measure your TV first.

Everything else follows from the screen. Fix its size and height before any drawings, and allow for the one after this one, as TVs tend to get bigger.

Pick the fire before the frame.

An inset fire comes with its own instructions for clearances and ventilation, and the frame has to be built around them. Choose the model first, then build to the manufacturer's instructions.

Think about the cables.

Decide where the sockets, the box and the soundbar go. A new circuit is notifiable, so it has to be done by a registered competent person, or notified to building control.

Check behind the wall.

If there's an old chimney breast or you're cutting into anything structural, get it checked first. In older houses, remember that asbestos can be present in any building built or refurbished before 2000.

Decide on the shelves.

Recesses with soft lighting are what make these walls look expensive, but every one needs planning for wiring from the start.

Does a media wall need building regulations?

Not usually for the joinery itself, but electrical work can be notifiable, and anything structural is a different question. Check with building control if you're unsure.

How much does a media wall cost?

Every wall is different, so we quote each one. Our quotes are free.
